A folk artist is any person who believes they are creating folk art; musicians, singers, poets, dancers, storytellers, costume makers and actors will most likely form the bulk of the participants for this project, but there may be others we don’t know are using digital tools and resources. Artist is an odd word as many will immediately think of someone with a paintbrush, but as popular singers, dancers and actors are increasingly being described as (performing) artists, it seemed a good term to use for creators of folk arts.

We will also be speaking in terms of folk participants, since many people involve themselves in the folk arts for the enjoyment they get from taking part, rather than for any intention to create an artistic work, per se.
