Deare freind
the same euening which brought me hither from Bremen brought yowrs of the 30 of June unto me: I thanke yow for yowr informations & aduices, which I know come from a sincere affection unto the public cause of Religion; as for me, I hope the Lord will keep me (as I daily pray unto him) without carnall endes, & teach me to walke in a straight waye to doe him seruice, which verily I am reddie to doe, without consulting with flesh & blood as yow haue exhorted me: therefore in this busines wherof yow giue me notice, I will not consider any bodie after the flesh; that <is> under worldly respects; but will take up the matter & the circumstances therof in that spirituall relation wherin I stand toward towards all the Churches; & by which I am able only to doe seruice unto the public: which Relation if I may bee suffered to maintaine, & <can> gaine assistance in it, from the assembly of yowr Divines, then I shall conceiue hope that yowr motion will take some good effect; but if I should for outward respects bee driuen out of this waye; wherin to keep a good conscience & to walke by a rule, I must stand; then I shall conclude that this motion is but a flash, & a meer tryall of my constancie, wherby God doth proue me, whether or no, upon particular proposals, & priuat Hopes, I will leaue an uniuersall aime; which I am not resolued to doe, & can not intend without the breach of my solemne vow which is alreddie in print: for yow know that I haue vowed these particulars
1. That I shall neuer leaue of the prosecuting of a Religious peace amongst Protestants so long as I liue.
2. That I shall prosecute this aime Purely, without any mixture of other aimes with it.
3. That I shall not subordinat my spirituall endevours unto Politicall endes; nor suffer them to bee subordinated therunto by others, so farre as I am able to hinder it.
4. yet that I shall not hinder but rather will helpe the concurrence of good & lawfull endes therewith in a coordinat waye.
5. that my waye to seeke Ecclesiasticall Peace shall bee answerable to the tenour of the New couenant reuealed in scripture; & shall[altered?] bee followed without contentious disputes in the spirit of Lenitie & meeknes.
6. that all my proceedings & dealings with euery one, shall bee without partialitie; & Harmlesse; giuing no offence unto any, lest my ministerie should bee blamed, & that free accesse which I seeke towards [catchword: euery one]
[2/10/5B]

euery one, (& <which> is necessarie, that my endevours may not bee [fruitless in? MS torn] their behalfe) may not bee stopped & lost by reason of [worldly? MS torn] preiudices: which iustly they may take <up> if I should become partiall; whatsoeuer therefore can make me lyable to such preiudices, & will stoppe my waye from[altered] gaining <a free> accesse towards those with whom I haue to deale; I must needs auoid & Prudently decline, lest I should bee, or seeme to bee partiall; & consequently uselesse unto my worke of Christian Pacification & public edification, which must relate unto more Churches & Nations then one; & therefore <it> must bee so caried that euery one may haue an equall & iust interest in it so farre as they doe interest themselues in the Truth of Christianitie; & <in> the wayes of innocent Charitable dealing towards euery one. for this is one of the essentiall Characters of a true Christian to bee blamelesse & harmlesse without rebuke in the midst of a crooked & peruerse nation, doing euery thing without murmurings & disputings, that the word of life may bee held forth unto the world wherin wee should shine as lights, beeing the Children of God, the Father of lights; & doing all thinges openly as in his sight who doth see the secrets of all hearts & will lay open the same in due tyme. for which cause (as yow know I haue alwayes walked) [illeg. word?] now I must avoid all hidden thinges of darknes; & if I ought to answer yowr prouocation; I must put on an armour of light in this matter, to shew yow the waye of open dealing which I must follow if I should bee employed according to yowr motion.
Consider then that I cannot remoue from hence except I bee expresly called; & when I am called, I will endevour with the good liking of those under whom I stand here to come to unto yow; & hauing gotten their consent to depart from this station; I must also acquain acquaint the King who sent me hither, that I am called from the Charge which hee hath entrusted me withall about his daughter; unto another employment of a larger extent towards the Churches; wherunto I will desire his permission to apply my self, & to that effect also leaue to come ouer to yow: this I suppose will not bee euill taken on any side, because it will bee faire & unpartiall dealing, & keep a dore of accesse open unto me towards all, & of regresse to deale with those whom I leaue in these quarters; & that this dore may bee the better kept open, to inable me to doe good offices on all sides, it will bee requisite that with the call which ought to bee giuen to me; a safe conduct also for comming & going should bee sent unto me for a witnesse of their plaine & open intentions in making use of my seruice, & that I may bee able the more freely to owne my sincere aimes wherof I make public profession; & the credit due unto my upright dealing may bee the easier gained. this must bee the first steppe of my proceeding to preuent the [catchword: first causes]
[2/10/6A]

first causes of euill surmises & iealousies; which once hauing taken place will hardly bee cured & will infect and blaste all the particular actions which in processe of tyme may ensue towards those that are once prepossessed therewith. now I know that all euill surmises & iealousies cannot bee possiblely preuented, but that euen Prudencie it self in some that are wise, & weaknesse in others that are partiall, will breed iealousies, & that a rash speech or an imprudent action, or a false report of either of these will bee able to affect mens mindes with that passion; therefore I doe not think to exempt my self from the danger of this inconvenient by this cautiousnes; but I only doe; it & must intend to haue my dismission from hence thus procured, that I may satisfie mine owne iudgment in the waye of my proceeding without which care my conscience would not bee at rest & I should want in the future progresse of my worke; that resolution which is necessarie to support me to go through [stick?] with the undertaking wherunto yow call me: therefore I praye yow persuade them to yeeld unto this waye of proceeding for to initiate me in the employment wherunto they doe call me, that beeing once fairely entered upon it I may doe them & the public afterward the better seruice. I send yow here the copie of that which I wrote from Hamburg unto some in Scotland, yow may make use of it as yowr discretion shall teach yow, & I praye yow lette this present letter bee imparted to the leading Divines, & others of the parliament who helpe to leade on the uniuersall Counsells: The Grace of God bee with yow & direct yowr endevours to his glory & teach us to make use of the occasions which are offered to aduance his glory & the comfort of his Churches in all places where his name is truly knowen. I haue not tyme to write to my sister but by the next post God willing shee shall heare from me so I rest
                       Yowr most faithfull & most
