rænta (OSw) noun

A Latin loan-word, probably via German. Appears in a list of sources of income for the hæraþ (q.v.). A late addition to a pre-existing group of words, denoting, among other things, some compensation, be it in coin, in kind or labour, paid in advance or in arrears, for the use of (farm) land owned by someone else, and there is no clear or coherent distinction made between the usage of these words in the laws.
