Journalist and art critic. Contributed to left-wing journals, such as The Contemporary (Sovremenik), The Russian Word (Russkoe Slovo), and satirical journals The Spark (Iskra), and The Alarm-Clock (Budil'nik) which he also edited. In 1866 he was imprisoned in the St Peter and Paul fortress and subsequently exiled from St Petersburg.
