Chapter summaries

Based on the SHF milestones, these résumés take you to the start of the relevant section of narrative. They are based wherever possible on the SHF editions’ chapter divisions. If you click on a summary, you will see a list of all of those witnesses containing the material you wish to explore which have been transcribed. If a witness contains a version that is different from the ‘standard’ version, this will be indicated. Likewise, when the transcription currently available is only sampled, or if the text contained in that particular manuscript is incomplete, that information will also be provided.

You can click on a manuscript reference to view that witness’s version of the particular narrative in question, and use ‘Navigate’ to add additional witnesses. Some of the résumés/summaries point to the start of a sequence of chapters (e.g. Battle of Crécy or siege of Cherbourg).

(OFP § 1) Prologue to Book IV.

(OFP § 2) Froissart enquires with different lords about the peace talks at Leulinghem.

(OFP § 3–7) The joyous entry of Queen Isabeau of Bavaria into Paris (20 August 1389); Froissart witnesses the event.

(OFP § 8–10) The state banquet in the Palais [21 August 1389].

(OFP § 11) The burghers of Paris offer various gifts to the king, the queen and the duke of Touraine [22 August 1389].

(OFP § 12–13) Tournament held in Paris in honour of the queen [22–25 August 1389].

(OFP § 14) The charter of the treaty with England is read out in front of the French king and his advisors.

(OFP § 15–17) Marriage of Louis II of Anjou; his plans to capture Naples.

(OFP § 18) King Charles VI of France decides to visit Avignon and the Languedoc.

(OFP § 19) The duke of Oxford, who was exiled from England, goes to Dordrecht, then to Utrecht, then to France and finally to Brabant; the exiled archbishop of York stays with him.

(OFP § 20) King Charles VI leaves Paris and travels to Dijon, where during nine days he is received by the duke and duchess of Burgundy; he then leaves and goes to Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

(OFP § 21–22) King Charles VI and the dukes of Touraine, Berry and Burgundy are received by Antipope Clement VII in Avignon.

(OFP § 23–24) The royal council decides that King Charles VI and the dukes of Touraine and Bourbon will travel to the Languedoc, while the dukes of Berry and Burgundy will go back home; Berry and Burgundy lament their loss of influence over the affairs of the kingdom.

(OFP § 25) King Charles VI arrives in Montpellier and is received by the burghers of the city; the burghers of Montpellier complain to the king about the way the dukes of Anjou and Berry have administered the Languedoc and have taxed the people.
