Navigate

Under ‘Navigate’ are brought together different ways of accessing the primary materials of the Online Froissart.

• Manuscript Transcriptions takes you to an interactive page where you can open a manuscript transcription, add a second or a third, then navigate within each of these. Full instructions are provided on that page.

• Chapter Summaries takes you to a clickable list of brief summaries of narrative units for each of Books I, II, III and IV, as well as for the interpolations found in many Book I manuscripts based on the Grandes Chroniques de France. These summaries will help you find particular episodes or SHF chapters in those manuscripts which contain them. Click on a summary to open a box listing all of the transcriptions containing that episode, and choose the one you want. Once you have loaded an episode you can use ‘add witness ... ’ to compare the text with that of another manuscript witness (provided the passage has been transcribed in this other witness).

• English Translations (ToC) takes you to a clickable list of chapters from Books I, II and III that have been translated into modern English by Keira Borrill. The translations are based on the text of Besançon BM, mss. 864-865. Once you have loaded a particular episode in English, you can use ‘add witness ... ’ to compare it with one or more of our Middle French transcriptions for the same episode.

• Manuscript Facsimiles provides access to images of the project’s collection of facsimiles of complete manuscripts for which we have secured permission to display the images. Each image is viewable via a clickable thumbnail (about 50 per page). Larger images can be accessed via the Virtual Vellum viewer. Images are displayed subject to copyright.

• Miniatures provides access to a list of clickable thumbnails of all the pages containing miniatures.

• Navigate by printed edition page allows you to navigate directly to a manuscript transcription from a corresponding page of a printed edition where that manuscript page was used as the base for the edition. In the transcriptions the green icons showing an arrow pointing down and to the right represent page breaks in modern printed editions. Clicking on them will give the full information (page number and which edition it refers to).
