From Munday the 9. of April, to Munday the 16 of April. 1649.
Beginning Munday the 9. of April.
ALderman Reynoldson Lord Mayor of London, was this
day before the House, and being brought to the Bar,
It was demanded of him, why he disobeyed the Orders
of Parliament, sent to him to proclaim the Act
against Kingly Government, His Lordship said that
he could not in conscience do it, because of the Oaths
he had taken in the Exchequer - Chamber, and other
places, and that he conceived it the Sheriffes Office,
and desired to be excused therein.
The house ordered, That the said Lord Mayor of
London, for disobeying the Order of Parl. should pay
2000 l. as a fine, whereof 500 l. To be given to the poor of the city of London, 500 l. to
the poor of Westminster, 500 l. to the poor of Southwarke, and the other 500 l. to the
poor of the Tower Hamblets; That he shall suffer one months imprisonment in the
Tower of London, and that he be immediately degraded from being any longer Mayor,
and an order to be sent to the Common-Councell to chuse a new Lord Mayor in his
place.
Upon his desire to the house, leave was granted him to go home to his own house
or that night, and no more, and the next morning to go to the Tower.
