From Tuesday, January 23. to Tuesday, January the 30. 1648.
THe proceedings of the high Court of Justice on the triall of
the King, and what the King said for himself, being the great
Discourse of the Kingdome; the Kingdomes Intelligencer knew
not which way better to satisfie the expectation of the Readers then
to give them an exact account thereof from the beginning.
On Saturday Jan. 20. The King was brought into the Court,
The Lord President having informed him for what end the Commons
of England assembled in Parliament, had constituted that
high Court, he desired him to heare his Charge, which being prosecuted
by the Sollicitor Generall, The King desired him to hold a
little. But the Charge being read, The King was observed to smile
divers times, especially at the words of Tyrant, Traytor, Murtherer,
&c. The King being admonished by the Lord President, that
the Court did except his Answer, the King said, I would know by
what power I am called hither, I was not long agoe in the Isle of
Wight; how I came there is a longer story then I thinke is sit at
this time for me to speake of, but there I entred into a treaty with
both Houses of Parliament, with as much publick faith, as it is possible
to be had of any people in the world. I treated there with a
number of Honourable Lords and Gentlemen, and treated honestly
