An early fifteenth-century manuscript containing part of the
New Testament. McIntosh, Samuels and Benskin analyse the Prologue and Epistles only and ascribe a dialect of Herefordshire to these texts (1986, p. 199). Paues assigns a 'Southern' dialect to the Prologue, Peter, James, 1 John and the Pauline Epistles whilst 2-3 John, Jude, Matthew and the Acts are 'Midland with a more or less strong intermixture of Southern forms' with the Acts retaining 'pronounced traces of a North Midland dialect'.

One scribe writing in an Anglicana Formata hand. Characteristics: double compartment a, with both lobes even and upright; diamond-shaped lobe of d with square ascender stopping just above the line of writing. Diamond-shaped head of g with descender curving and closing with a small back tail. Curved descender towards the bottom with a tail on the top left side of the p, square head with shaft starting from the right towards the left, finishing just past the meeting point with the descender; two types of short r, sigma s used regularly in final position and long s in medial and initial position; the stem of ž ends with a small tail and the shaft curves towards the right to join the end of the descender; open w with the first stem terminating in a small serif and the second back stroke extending above the level of the letter turning towards right with a sharp angle and terminating with a tail. Body height: 3 mm in the English text. Whilst Paues (1904, p. xi) states that ff. 86r-101v were written by a second scribe, Ker concludes that although the hand varies in size there is only one scribe (1977, p. 258).

Not medieval. Size: 180 x 136 mm. Boards covered with brown morocco and front and back board covered with marbled paper leaving chain ring marks exposed. Sewn on seven bands across the spine, however, five are exposed and guilded with double lines in gold.

| ff. iii + 140 + iii. The manuscript is not completely foliated. There are two systems. The first paginates rectos and versos to quire p. 47 (24v). A foliation in pencil starts at p. 1, but is not regular to the end. After the fifth quire the foliation appears on the first folio only. |

| This manuscript was included in a gift to Selwyn College by , canon of Chester. He gave 500 books of mainly patristic literature in 1891 and further volumes by bequest in 1895 (Ker 1977, p. 258). The manuscript carries his ex-libris 'Wilhelmvs Magirus Cookssa' and 'The gift of William Cooke, M. A. of Trinity Hall, to Selwyn College' on the inside front cover. |
