City in northern Italy, in the province of the Veneto near Lake Garda. Progressive both politically and economically, Verona was under Venetian control from 1405-1797. Church music was centred at the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Matricolare; it also flourished at S Maria in Organo, S Eufemia, S Fermo Maggiore and S Anastasia. The most important musical establishment in Verona, however, was the Accademia Filarmonica, founded on 23 May 1543. It was on a site owned by the Accademia that Verona`s most important theatre, the Teatro Filarmonico, was opened on 6 January 1732. Mozart was in Verona several times during his trips to Italy: from 27 December 1769-10 January 1770; sometime between 4 and 11 February 1771 and again, that year, from 16-20 March, 18-20 August and 7 or 8 December; from 1-3 November 1772 and about 6-7 March 1772.
