The city, whose name derives from Mantus, the Etruscan god of the underworld, was for centuries ruled by the Gonzaga family (from 1328-1708). During the eighteenth century it was part of the Habsburg empire. Mozart visited Mantua from 10-19 January 1770, where he gave a concert at the Reale Accademia di scienze, lettere ed arti on 16 January
