Son of Franz Alphons Georg Firmian, nephew of Archbishop Leopold Anton Firmian, and brother of Leopold Ernst Mauritius Joseph Firmian; Obersthofmeister in Salzburg from 1736. As Obersthofmeister, Firmian was perhaps the most powerful figure in Salzburg, after the Archbishop. His duties included not only the running of the court but also the court music, and he was a strong supporter of the Mozarts. In 1735 he married Maria Maximiliana (Villa Lagarina/Trentino, 1717-Salzburg, 30 August 1793), a daughter of Carl Wenzel Graf Lodron. Lit.: Schuler, Mozarts Salzburger Freunde und Bekannte, 77-81; Ammerer and Angermüller, Salzburger Mozart Lexikon, 125.
