Artist. Knoller, son of the Tyrolean decorator Franz Knoller, studied in Innsbruck with Ignaz Pögl and Vienna with Paul Troger before spending three years in Rome from 1755 to 1757; thereafter he worked in Naples and Rome before settling in Milan where he was in effect court painter. Knoller met the Mozarts during their first visit to Milan, in February 1770, and again in February 1773; he is said to be the artist of a miniature portrait presumed to be Mozart, executed in 1773 and now in the Mozart Museums, Salzburg.
