Founded in the thirteen century, Hallein is situated on the Salzach river approximately 14km south of Salzburg; the capital of the Tennengau district, it is the second largest city in Salzburg province. Hallein is chiefly known for its salt mines; settlements in the area have been traced back 4000 years
