Dilettant violinist. Wolkenstein belonged to an old Tyrolean family that included the Prince-Bishop of Trento Antonio Domenico. After studies at Trento, he transferred to Milan for two years, in 1770, where he met the Mozarts. In late 1770 he accompanied Antonio Bridi on an educational trip to Rome, Naples, Florence and Bologna and in July 1771 married Massimiliana Lodron, daughter of Ernest Maria Joseph Lodron of Salzburg. They settled in Trento.
