Composer and violinist. A pupil of Giuseppe Tartini, Nardini was from 1770 music director to the Grand Duke of Tuscany in Florence. The Mozarts first met Nardini at the Stuttgart court in early July 1763: `. . . I have heard a certain Nardini and . . . it would be impossible to hear a finer player for beauty, purity, evenness of tone and singing quality. But he plays rather lightly` (letter of 11 July 1763). They met again in Florence, in April 1770, at which time Nardini accompanied Mozart (letter 173). Thomas Linley, with whom Mozart also became friendly during their time in Florence, was a pupil of Nardini. Lit.: Pfäfflin, Pietro Nardini; Pietro Nardini violinista e compositore; Basso, I Mozart in Italia, 619-620
