stallari (OSw) stallari (ON) noun

In Norway the king’s marshal, the stallari, Medieval Lat. comes stabuli (‘head of the horse-stable’), was originally in charge of the king’s stables. He was the highest ranked officer of the royal bodyguard (hirð) and the king’s spokesman there and at the assembly. According to Norwegian provincial laws (GuL ch. 185, FtL Mhb, ch. 60) he had the same rank and legal status as a lendr maðr (see lænder). In Sweden, the stallari was a prominent member of the retinue of other highly ranked persons, such as, e.g., bishops, with varying functions.
