lögskuld (ON) noun

A type of servitude imposed upon those who could not pay their debts. Bounden debtors held limited rights in some sections of Grg, but their legal status returned to normal once their debt was discharged. Dependents of a man condemned to slavery for theft could also be placed into legal debt-bondage (cf. Grg Rsþ 229). Outside of Grg lögskuld may also refer to legal debt rather than debt-bondage.
