Literally ‘to complain’, and hence to state one’s complaint to an opponent or to court, particularly concerning disputed land and other property. Expresses a complaint that could be dealt with at the þing ‘assembly’, possibly as a formal start of legal proceedings. The participle, oklandaþer (q.v.), appears in several adjective phrases, often concerning land that has not been subject to a legal challenge and therefore can be lawfully used.
