húskarl (ON) noun

Several compounds beginning with hus ‘house’ or hem ‘home’ refer to people of varying status and degree of dependence serving at or managing a house(hold), and a karl was a grown man, potentially a warrior. Thus, a man performing service, including military, at the house or in the retinue of another, usually high-ranking, man, or possibly woman.
