höggskógr (ON) noun

Cutting woodland; a scarce and therefore valuable resource in medieval Iceland. Usually mentioned in contrast with scrubland (ON rifhrís). A höggskógr is broadly defined as a wooded area which can be cut down more quickly than pulled up in Jó Llb 24. Ownership regulations concerning trees which became sufficiently thick to qualify as cutting woodland are given in Grg Lbþ 190.
