frumváttr (ON) noun

A witness who was present at an event and can give testimony to it. Usually refers to a witness who is ill or otherwise unable to travel and give testimony when needed. In such a case the testimony of an indisposed frumváttr could be taken by two other men who then presented the original testimony at court.
