frilla (OSw) friðla (ON) noun

A (free) woman living with a man without them being married. The church acted against these relationships (OSw YVgL). The woman could gain status of legal wife after 20 years (ONorw GuL). Children were not called horbarn (‘children born in adultery’) and there existed varying rights to mutual paternal inheritance.
