fjörbaugr (ON) noun

A ‘life ring’. A mark of legal tender given to the chieftain (ON goði) who appoints a confiscation court (ON féránsdómr). This mark is paid by a lesser outlaw (ON fjörbaugsmaðr) in order to avoid a sentence of full outlawry (ON skóggangr).
