That one time within the time arlate the defendant Sara Hulton in a very angry and uncivil manner (as this deponent conceived) at the plaintiff Mr Ashton's own house in the Forrest Street Chester called the said Mr Ashton blind Ashton and one-eyed Ashton, and said that so high as he was got she hoped to see him fall, and she never cosened the King of thirty pounds betwixt sun and sun or to that purpose, at which time were present also Richard Mather and Mary Rowbotham... That the plaintiff for several years last past hath been and is an inhabitant and innholder in the City of Chester, and of good repute and credit, and is one of the Common Council of the City, and hath borne the office of leavelooker here, and for such a one is commonly reputed.
That one day about the month of May last past and within the time arlate, the arlate Sara Hulton was at the plaintiff this deponent's Master Mr Thomas Ashton's house in the Forrest Street, and this deponent being a servant there, and in the house at that time, did hear the said Sara very loud and give this deponent's master many uncivil words, but being going up and down about her occasions did not much heed or mind to remember all that then the said Sara said, only she well remembers that the said Sara called the said Mr Ashton many times blind Ashton, and in a scornful manner said alas a day you have been one of the leavelookers of Chester... At which time this deponents precontest Francis Shepherd was also in the room with them, and coming and going upon his occasions as she this deponent also was, and Richard Mather was then also with them.
That one day within the time arlate the plaintiff Mr Thomas Ashton on the one part and the defendant Sara Hulton and her husband on the other part were about some accounts and reckonings which were betwixt them, and some falling out and words happened amongst them thereabout in the said Mr Ashton's house, and amongst other words and passages the said Sara speaking to her said husband said Jack Hulton if thou had robbed the king of £30 in a day betwixt sun and sun as somebody did thou might wear a gold ring as well as the rest upon which words the said Ashton asked her who did see to whom the said Sara answered thou blind Thomas Ashton did, and further in angry passion told the said plaintiff that he to defraud the creditors he had sworn that his mother died not worth a pewter thorn and gave him several other uncivil and unhandsome and disparaging words.
