In the time of Lent Anno Domini 1607 and in the month of March that year... William Wickham speaking of John Idle said that John Idle had begotten his maid with child and that he had the justices warrant to apprehend him for the same, which words were spoken in the house of John Rombald in Burnham Westgate in the hearing of this deponent, Gowen Stockdale, Thomas Overton and divers others… He has known Idle six years and Wickham one year… The words afore deposed were spoken upon a Saturday as he remembereth and in the forenoon about 11 of the clock… He is worth 40s, debts paid, and liveth upon his trade, and upon a pension granted for his service in the Irish wars by His Majesty… He went to the house of the said Rombald to drink a cup of beer after he had left work and there found Wickham who had not apprehended Idle but said he had a warrant.
In the time of Lent Anno Domini 1607 and in the month of March in the said year William Wickham came into the house of John Rombald in Burnham Westgate paarish and there speaking of John Idle said that Idle had begotten his maid with child and that he had the justices warrant to take him and would have him whipped and drive him out of the country, which words were spoken in the hearing of this deponent, Paul Percivall and of divers others in the house of Rombald in the parish of Burnham Westgate… He has known the parties litigant 20 years… The words aforedeposed were spoken upon a Saturday in the forenoon coming into the roomth where this deponent, Percivall, Thomas Overton, Richard Lime, one Gilbert of Barmere and others were present demanded if they would drink and being answered that they would not drink he said, How say you masters, John Idle hath played the brothel, he hath gotten his maid with child, and I have been at Sir Hamond Straunge's for a warrant to take him, he shall be whipped and I will drive him out of the country… He is worth £10, every man paid and liveth by his trade and occupation… He had taken work to do of Gilbert of Barmere and was sent for by Gilbert to speak with him and by that occasion he happened to be present at the speaking of the words aforedepsosed.
