That at the time of uttering and speaking the curses of defamation this deponent was at the shop of one Bumsdell in Pentney where the Widow Finnell was, and at the time Simon Morrell arlate came into the shop [Blacksmith’s] disordered with drink as this deponent perceived, and did then and their rail on the arlate Anne Farrell and gave her very evil language and sayeth that the said Morrell is a common frequenter and haunter of alehouses… That at the time of the words uttered by Anne Farrell the arlate Simon Morrell did provoke her (as predeposed)… calling her whore.
That he this deponent have known the arlate Simon Morrell by the space of 12 years last past or thereabouts in which time the said Simon was and is a frequenter of alehouses and tippling houses and by his carriage is… weakened… as is commonly reported.
