This deponent in the month of February and upon the third day of the same month he did hear Nathaniel Greenwood say that Thomas Ingram and his now wife did live incontinently before they were married [and] would prove it by two witnesses, which words were spoken maliciously as this deponent did verily believe, in the presence of this deponent, Mr Robert Tooly, Mr Tobias Peckett and Wolstan Rant his contests and some others in the house of John Cadywood situate within the parish of St Michael… The words before by [him] deposed of, were occasioned by talking of [illegible] depending in this court between Thomas [Ingram] and John Greenewood and by wishing a peace [between] them, and were spoken as he verily believeth [in] envious manner as he conceived by the manner of [his] speaking… Thomas Ingram came to this respondent after the words before by him deposed of were spoken, and asked him what words [he had] heard Nathaniel Greenewood use of him, [ileegible] this respondent told him so much as now he hath deposed… Thomas Ingram and Nathaniel Greenwood... and this respondent and some others were in company together and did drink wine together and as he believeth did drink one to another… After Nathaniel Greenewood had spoken the words before by him deposed he desired this respondent and some of his contests not to reveal the same words, whereupon some of them answered that they would not promise so much, upon which speech Nathaniel replied in these words following... tell him if you will for I can prove it by two witnesses… This respondent and Toby Peckett his contest were present when Thomas Ingram and Nathaniel Greenewood did agree to refer all differences between them to Mr Robertes and Mr Porter, which was drawn in writing and subscribed by Thomas and Nathaniel. And further this producent saith that at the same time when the said parties met about the reference and had concluded it, Nathaniel said to Thomas Ingram, that because the cause was referred he should not need to appear at the court, to which Thomas answered, that he must appear but might do it by his proctor, Nathaniel replying that it would be chargeable, whereupon Thomas said that rather than he would lose that court day he would pay the charge thereof himself.
This deponent and Nathaniel Greenewood had some speech concerning the suit depending in this court between Thomas Ingram and John Greenewood when and where Nathaniel said that his brother John Greenewood would or should prove what he had said concerning Thomas Ingram... There was then and there present in the room where they were Robert Tooly, William Lambert and Wolstan Rant his contests and divers others… The words before predeposed of were occasioned by speech of the [illegible] depending between Thomas Ingram [and] John Greenewood… Thomas Ingram and Nathaniel Greenewood and this respondent and William Lambert his contest did meet at the Sign of the Mermaid in Norwich and there did drink wine and Thomas and Nathaniel did drink one to the other and one pledged the other, which was so done since the speaking of the words before by him deposed… Nathaniel Greenwood after he had spoken the words before by him deposed desired this deponent and [illegible] rest present, not to reveal the same, [but?] some of the company answered that they would not promise that, wishing that they had not heard the said words… This respondent and William Lambert were present at the time when [it] was agreed that all differences between Thomas and Nathaniel should be [illegible] to order and that there was a note or writing made which both they did subscribe.
