Right worthy & beloved in the truth
I received yowrs of the 19. of Ian instant, wherby I perceive that yow have received Richardsons tables, & our freinds paper of fundamentaLls. I have any tyme this 3. or 4. weeks long'd as much to be with yow, as yee cowld to see me, but cowld not conveniently come so soone, & as I had resolved 2. or 3. weeks agoe, becaws disappointed in some things I trusted to, & wheron my iowrney did depend. I shall be with yow as soone as I can. What yee desire me to informe yow off, take this for the præsent, that I heare the fwll number of the chanons of Christs Church are 8. and a deane, wheras I think by the word deane it self, or decanus ther showld be nyn besyd himself, who is, & showld be by that word the tenth. the eight Canons are 1. Doctor Rogers, an honest man, who is also principall of new in hall; 2. Dr Wall one of the old stocke that hath submitted, & is retain'd Canon, but hath no other place that I can heare of. 3. Dr. Mills, that was Iudge advocat of the army, but put out by them for no fawlt, that I cowld heare off, but for not being of a levelling mynd. 4. Mr Cornish, who is also lecturer of the toune, & preaches at Carefax ordinarily in discharge of that lecture: [5.? altered] Mr Wilkinson, who is vicepræsident of Magdalen Colledge, & actuall minister (I beleeve) as yet of Dunstans in the East of london: 6. Mr langley, who is also Master or head of Pembrok colledge; 7. Mr pocock, the hebrew lecturer, that lecture being annexed into a canons place. 8. Mr Button, who is orator of the vniversitie (this also being annexed to a Canons place) and also procurator iunior for this yeere, which is a place both of great credit & profit, & he is also senior fellow of Merton colledge, wherof Sir Nathanaell Brent is head. This is the number I am informed off. But, as I take it, ther is a nynth Canons place, which is annexed to the kings Proffessorship of Theologie, who for the præsent is Dr Hoyll, & head of vniversity Colledge. Hee is now at London I take it, & often with Dr Wsher. The other proctor or procurator Mr Crosse hath the lecture of naturall philosophie, which is better then an hundreth lib. a yeere, & is senior fellow both of Magdalen Colledge & of lincolne Colledge for the tyme. One Mr Coply that is fellow of merton

colledge also hath the lecture of morall philosophie, which is better then 100. lib. yeerly. Mr Cheynell that is president of Ihon baptists Colledge, hath the Catherine lecture of divinity, that is better then six score lib. a yeere. No Colledge, nor Hall wants an head, good or bad, save New Colledge, for which I heare is designed by the visitors one Dr Staines, if my lord Hey & they can agree on it but the Gouernowr of Oxford, some say, is dealling to gett in one Mr Marshall, his <owne> Chaplaine, (who for the præsent is of Magdalen Colledge) some say that it is not unlyke, he intends for it himself. As for fellows places, I am informed in generall, that ther is few, or none vacant or void, that is much worth more then ther dyet & chamber. for the fellows places in new colledge have been hitherto litle worth, becaws they spend so much excessively & needlessly on [ther?] table, which otherways might come to their purses & make the places of better valew. Most of all the halls are places of great pains, to the heads, & no profit almost, that I heare off (but their lodging) belonging to them by any foundatione: and any profit they have otherways, must arise to them by their schollars as it wer by way of a tutors fees for his pains, & what they can make by the Commons or tabling of them. This for the present, what I can give yow knowledge off, with the nixt caryer yee may expect some more (& as neer to that punctivall informatione, as I can attaine) from yowr
