Extract out of my Brothers letter.
This euening I am informed by some wellwiller of ours, that at a Committee of the house of Commons, some words haue bene let fall which tended much to the impayring of your reputation; namely that you were declining from your relligion, and that with <in> your negotiations with the King of Denmarke, and other Princes of late you had done, or at least attempted to doe ill offices to your Countrey. The French Ambassador hath lately insinuated to the Parliament, that his Master is informed that our King, either with consent of his Parliament, or without it, had geuen commission to his Ministers abroad, that are employed to treate about the restitution of the Palatinate, and Electorall dignitie, to promise upon the same that his Majestie will engage himselfe in a league with the Emperour offensiue and defensiue against all. It hath bene also sayd that you haue laboured with the King of Denmarke, and others, to send forces into this Kingdome against the Parliament. Wherof I beleeue no part; yet thought it my part presently to aduertise you of these aspersions or iealousies (for I knowe not what name to giue them) that you may speedily vindicate your reputation &c.
I am partly minded to send such a Copie as aforsayd to the Secretarie of State: for he can cleare me also, if he please &c.
