I have not a word of newes besides that in the courantoes. Our laguer makes itselfe readie for a winter leager. the most part of the forces are gone into guarrisons. One told mee it was thought that the prince had lost this yeere by sword et famin some 35000 men. the siknesse increases dayly in all the cities, at Leiden specially the judgement of G. is marvailous [hate?], in so much that in no citie of those countries ever has been heard the like, nay not in Amsterdam. Laste weeke died in Leiden 1400 et odde, et laste Sabbatday 240. My good hostesse is dead too with her sonne, et i have left the [mone?] of my bookes et papers in her house. j come now from seeing a certain commentarie upon Catechesin Heidelberg. collected in Latin out of many authors, it seems to bee a good worke, though not in such a way as i wish, yet in a better then ever i saw. I hope it will bee printed shortly. The Synode of Utreght has given this following approbation unto it:
[11/1/91A]

[Testantur?] nos infra scripti, Commentarium hunc catecheticum Davidis Gilberti Ultrajectini immenso labore, perspicaci judicio, accuratâ methodo ex præstantissimis quibusque orthodoxorum theologorum dogmaticis, [elencticis?] et practicis scriptis concinnatum nihil continere quod pietati et communi Eccclesiarum nostrarum fidei repugnet, ideoque dignissimum esse, qui ad multorum, nominatim SS. theologiæ candidatorum utilitatem quamprimum in lucem edatur. If hee had a good index it would bee a good booke. I have given him my meditations about index, et hee promises to make use of them. D. Alting desired mee to notifie unto him whether there were not any that had in English written about theologia historica. If yee know let mee know. j pray write seriously what is Mr Rulicius his pourpous, whether come or not. Vale. 18 Octobr. 1635.
