A Coppy of Mr Dury's Letter to Mr. Hartlib.
               Hanaw 18. Iune 1655.
I am now here at Hanaw, all that I could desire is done in Switzerland; I left those of Basel in a very good temper & resolution to proceed with the rest; I left some Papers with them to bee considered wherof they promised to give me an account; amongst other things a draught of the Correspondencie, which is to bee entertained amongst themselves & with us, wherof in due time you shall have a Copie. The last week I came hither in safety, God bee thanked though an unfreqvented way [4 words illeg.], rugged [woddie?] [2? words illeg.] made all the haste I could riding ordinarily [for?] sometimes 12. houres a day. I stopt only one halfe day at Stutgardt, the Residence of the Duke of Wirtemberg; which I did of purpose to sound the Inclination of the Duke, & of his Chief Counsellours, & to lay some ground, & make an ouverture of future acqvaintance about my busines: & the Lord so ordered Circumstances, which I have no time now to relate at large, that I had a full discouery of a very good affection to vs, & to my worke; & laid a foundation of future Correspondencie with two of the Dukes Counsellours. In all the rest of my way from Basel hither I kept myself altogether unknowen, & went out of the high way & trauelling roade, as being warned, that wait might bee laid for me. Now I have begunne to deale with those of Hanaw & by their advice to act towards the Circle of the [Westeraw?]; & to that effect, I am printing the things to bee communicated, because no transcribing will [reach?] the qvarter of that which is to bee imparted. The Landgrave of Hessen hath declared his willingnes to concurre in this busines: the Copie of his Letter to the Switzers, by the next you shall have God willing. The newes which I have learned since I came hither, is this. That this meeting at Francfort is to no effect. That the Ecclesiasticall Electors are resolued to meet apart, & not to send any Deputies hither. That a new dyet of the Empire is nominated & resolved upon to bee called on May 1. 1656 at Ratisbone, where the Emperour will endevour to have his Son made King of the Romans.
As for the Piemont Protestants, it is written thus from Geneva the [21?] Maj by Monsieur [Troncire?], the Senior Pastor & Professor there. Wee are told that those of the Vallies of Peimont, with the help which hath beene given them from [Dauphine?] & Languedoc have beaten brauely their persecutors, & cut in pieces the Irish, that were the Chief murtherers, & have recouered some of their places. That they haue gotten hold of two Capuchin Friers, which they keep & caused Letters go to the Court of Savoye, that as they use their two Ministers whom they have taken, so these Capuchins shall bee vsed in like manner. That the Madame Royall (shee is the Qveene of Englands [catchword: Sister]
[237B]

Sister, & mother to the present young Duke of Savoye) did aske of her Confessor whether shee was to answer before God for the massacre of the Protestants in the Vallies; the Confessor wrote into Spain concerning this, the Letter was intercepted, & hee clapt up into a Castle, where men are wont to bee made out of the way secretly. Blood has a crye in the Conscience of those that shedde it; & God makes himself knowen by the judgments which hee executeth: Psal:9. It is also said that my Lord Protector hath demanded of the King of France that Iustice bee done upon the authors of the Massacre; otherwise that hee will take a course to see justice done it is indeed hee that can most effectually remedie this evill. God hath made vse of me to publish the second Edition of all the Confessions, & I hope hee will make me Capable also to bring forth the second Edition of their [Harmanie?], as is desired for the worke of [Beace?]/ Thus farre hee.
