He has extensive experience in the design and development of digital platforms for the arts, humanities, and cultural heritage sectors, working across a wide range of collaborative, multi-partner projects. His work has focused particularly on the creation of systems for managing, analysing, and presenting complex historical and cultural datasets, including digital archives, textual corpora, and heritage collections.

Since 2011, Matthew has acted as technical lead or lead developer on over 30 DHI projects. These include major cultural heritage and research initiatives such as Manuscripts Online, England’s Immigrants (1330–1550), European Cinema Audiences, the Letters of Richard Cobden Online and BBC Radio News Scripts. His portfolio also includes work on large-scale data and infrastructure projects (e.g. Linguistic DNA of Modern Western Thought, OED Concept Interface), digital editions (C21 Editions, Olive Schreiner Letters Project), and public-facing engagement platforms (Historic Houses, Global Crossroads, and Spaces of HOPE).

Across these projects, Matthew has worked extensively with archival materials, historical records and heterogeneous datasets, developing systems that support search, discovery and user interaction. His expertise spans full-stack web development, content management systems, search and browse functionality, and the integration of multimedia and structured data. He has a strong track record of delivering robust, scalable, and user-focused digital resources that support both scholarly research and public engagement within the cultural heritage sector.
