Arnulf acted as papal legate and chaplain to Robert II of Normandy. He was asked to offer spiritual leadership to the army by Adhemar, bishop of Le Puy, who was on his deathbed. He was elected as patriarch of Jerusalem in August 1099, but the papal legate refused to recognise the appointment. He served as archdeacon of Jerusalem, finally becoming patriarch in 1112.
