Hugh was a major leader of the crusade. The king of France was excommunicated at the time of the crusade because of his marriage to Bertrada of Montfort. Hugh wrote to Alexios Komnenos to inform him of his imminent arrival with a crusading contingent. At Constantinople he took an oath to Alexios which was described as the 'customary oath.' During the siege of Antioch he was sent as an emissary to Alexios but he never returned.
