Pittance

A pious donation or bequest to a religious community to provide an additional allowance of food, for example, fish or eggs, or wine, on special occasions such as feast days or anniversaries. These delicacies were known as pittances and might be served once a week or more. The Cistercian General Chapter stipulated that pittances should not be served on three consecutive days.
