An abbey which founded another Cistercian community
(its daughter-house) was known as the mother-house; for example,
Fountains Abbey established Newminster
Abbey, and was therefore
its mother-house, while the abbot of Fountains was the Father
Abbot.
Newminster was a daughter-house of Fountains.
