The gatehouse at Roche

The almoner was an important monastic official in Benedictine houses, but in Cistercian abbeys his duties were carried out by the porter. The Cistercian porter, therefore, combined the roles of gatekeeper and almoner, admitting visitors and distributing alms to the deserving poor.
