Notes:

Chiang was commonly depicted as a Shanghai gangster by both the Japanese military and the Chinese communists. In this image, taken from one of the leading sources of satirical images of Chiang produced during the Chinese Civil War, an armed Chiang, dressed in the flat cap and cloth shoes of the Chinese hooligan, gives sackloads of Chinese sovereignty to 'American imperialism', dressed as a Mexican bandit. Note the plaster (looking remarkably like the Japanese flag) on Chiang's temple.
