He'erlimen de baxi (Hurley's game)

Title: He'erlimen de baxi (Hurley's game)
Artist: Hua Junwu 華君武
Created: 26 July 1945
Media: cartoon
Source: Jiefang Ribao
Notes:

Hua Junwu would emerge from the Chinese Civil War as one of the most celebrated of visual satirists of Chiang Kai-shek. In this earlier image, however, Hua's archetypal Chiang has yet to be developed. Instead, Chiang is shown as a balloon inflated by the US ambassador to China at the time, Patrick J. Hurley. Of note here is that Hua's depiction of Chiang lacks many of the features that would later typify his imagery, including the plaster on Chiang's temple.
