Abstract

Jane claimed that Roger had defamed her in the town of Thirsk by declaring that she was ‘an oold and noughtye toothles wytche, arrant hoore, oold hoore, withered witche and drab.’ He denied this accusation. Jane brought 4 witnesses who confirmed they were at or near the shop of Jane’s husband in Thirsk when they had heard Roger defame Jane. All the witnesses remembered some part of the sexual slander against Jane, but none mentioned the witchcraft element quoted by Jane. There is no sentence in this case.
