Abstract

Searson challenged Radbourn to prove a will of Jackson (her former employer) in which Radbourn was named as the executrix. Searson alleged that this will had been prepared on Radbourn’s instructions with the connivance of one William Wragg. Searson claimed that Wragg and Radbourn had unsuccessfully attempted to persuade one Elijah Barker to fraudulently signed Jackson’s name on the will in return for money, and had then convinced John Oldershaw to do the same. Searson further alleged that Jackson had declared that he would never make a will, and that Radbourn and Wragg had admitted that he had not done so. Searson also claimed that both friends of Jackson and an expert had sworn that the signature on the will was not genuine. Searson exhibited documents to prove his case and brought witnesses (including Nethercliff, a handwriting expert) who supported his allegations and stated their belief that Radbourn had committed fraud. Radbourn denied these claims, bringing as witnesses Oldershaw, Sills the younger and Sills the elder, all of whom were implicated in the charge of fraud. A document indicates that Radbourn was tried at York Assizes.
