Abstract

George and Edward accused John of being an atheist and a heathen, and openly declaring that there was no God, or devil, or heaven or hell, and no life after death. They also alleged that John frequently brawled in the church yard, disturbed services in the church and hindered the minister in his duty, as well as preaching false doctrine in the church. George and Edward further claimed that John engaged in sorcery and fortune telling and alleged that he had refused to obey previous court orders issued against him, instead drawing his dagger at the constable and resisting arrest. Finally, John was accused of slandering his neighbours and sowing dissent within his community. The libel is accompanied by George and Edward’s petition for the case to be heard and the warrant for his arrest. John denied the charges against him, but admitted that he had blasphemed using the names of God and the devil. He also admitted to speaking from the pulpit in the church but claimed he had been urging people to observe Midsummer Day as a holy day. John also agreed that he had resisted arrest, but claimed that this was only until he was shown the warrant for his arrest. George and Edward produced witnesses who supported their allegations. The documents also include a handwritten religious tract (or copy of a sermon?) on the founding of the feast day of St. John the Baptist.
