Abstract

William succeeded Marmaduke to the living of Wharram Percy, and accused him of leaving the vicarage buildings in a poor state of repair. William claimed that Marmaduke rebuilt the vicarage house, but that the new building was much smaller than the old, and contained no place to store corn and grain collected as tithes. Marmduke admitted that he had carried our building works, but claimed that there were now more buildings than when he had taken the living. Both parties produced witnesses. Those for William supported his claim that the new vicarage house was smaller than the old, and that other vicarage buildings were in a state of disrepair. Witnesses for Marmaduke confirmed that he had done work to the vicarage buildings but believed there were no fewer buildings than previously. Some witnesses further claimed that William had been present at the measuring of the new vicarage house. Marmaduke produced two sets of counter articles in which he gave details of the building works he had carried out and the monies spent, and criticised William’s witnesses. William’s responses reiterated his own claims about the vicarage buildings.
