Abstract

Christopher issued a long list of accusations against Thomas which included neglecting his duty as a priest and non-residence in his benefice, refusing to say services in English, refusing to recant his Catholic beliefs and continuing to use prayer beads, spending time at an alehouse, harassing married clergymen, refusing to bury a man with Protestant beliefs and wilfully damaging an English Bible. Christopher further accused Thomas of having an illicit sexual relationship with his (Christopher’s) wife Isabel, writing her letters, giving her gifts and having to hide in their house and he returned unexpectedly as well as illicit relations with other women. Thomas admitted he had lodged in an alehouse for a year, and said he had received one letter from Isabel dictated to her by Christopher. He denied the rest of the charges against him. Thomas was bound over for the sum of £100 to appear before the courts on a further occasion. Christopher produced a large number of witnesses all of whom provided evidence for Thomas’ relationship with Isabel. A few also commented on his place of residence and his alleged refusal to bury a man with Protestant beliefs. Occasional mention was made of the use of beads in the parish, and of Thomas’s alleged destruction of the bible. The moral issues are far more prominent in the witness depositions than the religious issues.
