The Antipodes

Performance 1638 Salisbury Court Theatre, Fleet Street, London Henrietta Maria's Men (Queen's Majesty's Servants)

Comments from Source

As recorded on the 1640 Quarto title page.
Performance 26 August 1661 King's House (Theatre Royal, Vere Street) London The King's Company under Sir Thomas Killigrew

Comments from Source

Performance referenced in Samuel Pepys's Diary for 1661: "[...]to the Theatre and saw the "Antipodes" wherein there is much mirth, but no great matter else".
Performance July 1662 Thomas Killigrew's Company

Comments

Without a date, between 6 and 23 July.
Bawcutt includes this in a list of Killigrew's Company's performances from 1660 to 1662 as recorded in the Revels Documents, 1660-1673, where the date of first performance is recorded as the 6th July, 1662. (See Bawcutt, p.268.) It was presumably a revival of the production that Pepys records as seeing the same company play in August 1661.

Master of Clothing and Properties - Jenny Tiramani
Master of Music - Claire Van Kampen
Extensive archive at Shakespeare's Globe. The text of the play as used for this production, edited by David Scott Kastan and Richard Proudfoot, was published by Nick Hern Books in 2000. The volume carries a two-page introduction by Gerald Freedman, the "Master of Play", who describes the play and his production as conjuring up "a frolicsome world of nonsense and common sense".
Performance 18 March 2004 The Boilerhouse, Royal Holloway, Egham, Surrey Richard Cave Undergraduate students

Comments

The production (heavily cut to run for just under two hours) was mounted as part of a Performance Research Project that ran throughout the Spring Term of the academic year, 2003-2004. The largest cut was made to Act Five: the students elected to omit the character of Truelock and the revelation of Diana's parentage; instead her strand of the plotting ended with Joyless's line "She is invincible!", after which the play moved swiftly towards the masque. Much was made of the fact that the figures of Discord were not utterly quelled but temporarily vanquished: rising, they left the house but would continue to haunt its environs. The final masque was performed in full.

Performance 15 November 2008 The Vault, University of Winchester Rob Conkie Undergraduate students

Comments

Rob Conkie comments - the production was played in modern dress and for broad comedy, including a life-sized Skippy the Kangaroo and some very dodgy Australian accents. Conkie was returning to Australia and he spoke the Epilogue to the cast and audience as a farewell to the University of Winchester and the UK.

The Court Beggar

Performance 1640 Cockpit [AKA Phoenix], Drury Lane William Beeston Beeston's Boys

Comments

CB has been thought to be the play which the Master of the Revels records as having occasioned the closure of the Cockpit/Phoenix in Drury Lane, and the incarceration of members of the company, at the beginning of May 1640. The earliest extant text (1653), however, includes apparent references to events which occurred late in August of 1640 and possibly also to some early business of the Parliament which opened in November.

Comments

As part of Globe Education’s `Read Not Dead’ 2012/13 series, the play was rehearsed only on the day of the single matinee performance, for which the actors were still `on book’. Lucy Munro, who had recommended the selection of the play, provided the programme note. The acting edition, was prepared by Martin Hodgeson as director of the performance. His annotation and direction emphasised gender politics, an emphasis that was furthered by a particularly strong performance from Frances Marshall as Lady Strangelove. The venue was a rectangular room with only two entrances. The audience were seated on all four sides, none more than three rows deep, and stage furniture was minimal.

Covent Garden Weeded

Performance 1632

Comments

There are no records of early performances of the play. However, topical references in the text strongly suggest that it was written and first performed in late 1632 or the first half of 1633. For a review of these and conclusions concerning dates of composition and performance, see Kaufmann (1961), p. 74; and Steggle (2004), p. 43.
Run 1641

Comments

The printed text of the play (1659) includes two prologues and two epilogues. The second prologue says that the play was first perfomed 'ten years since' (line 5), suggesting that it was revived shortly before the closing of the theatres at the outbreak of the English Civil Wars. There are no records confirming this, however.
Performance 14 November 1999 Shakespeare's Globe, Bankside, London Alison Stilbeck

Comments

There was a reading of this play in the 'Read Not Dead' series at Shakespeare's Globe on 14 November 1999, co-ordinated by Alison Skilbeck. A tape recording of the performance is available for consultation in the archives of Shakespeare's Globe.

The City Wit

Performance 1630 Salisbury Court? Children of the King's Revels?

Comments

As there is no entry for The City Wit in Henry Herbert's records, the date of the first performance of the play has to be a matter of conjecture. 1630 is the usual date proposed (see Introduction).
Performance 1637

Comments

Because the second part of the prologue speaks of Ben Jonson as if he were dead, it has been hypothesised that this part of the prologue was written for a revival of The City Wit after Jonson's death in August 1637; however such a revival could have taken place any time between Jonson's death and the closure of the playhouses. G.E.Bentley (volume 3 p.59-60) develops this theory in some detail.
Performance 06 July 1661 Oxford Lincoln's Inn Fields

The Demoiselle

Performance 1638 Salisbury Court Queen Henrietta Maria's Men

Comments

The prologue refers to cultural politics of the period between late 1637 and late 1638; there is also an allusion to the recent staging of Brome's The English Moor, performed by Queen Henrietta Maria's Men shortly after the playhouses re-opened in October 1637.

The English Moor

Buzzard - Timothy Read

External Reviews

Read's performance as Buzzard is alluded to in the Praeludium to The Careless Shepherdess: 'I heard a fellow / Once on this stage cry, Doodle, Doodle, Dooe, / Beyond compare'. See also [DM 5.1.speech887], apparently referrring to Read's performance: 'See how you carry de hands like de comedien dat act de shangling'. For further discussion of both these allusions, and their implications for a more precise dating of the play, see the Introduction to The English Moor in this edition.
Performance 1641 ?Cockpit ?Beeston's Boys

Comments

The Textual Introduction makes the case that there was a revival of The English Moor, associated with O's prologue and epilogue. It dates the revival, tentatively, to 1641 or 1642, but other details about it are entirely speculative.

Edition of 1684.
Likely that this revival recurred no later than December 1683.
A new song, "There was a jolly beggar" in Act IV, Scene ii, was probably written for this revival. It was printed in 'Choice Ayres and Songs', The Fifth Book, 1684.

Publicity copy stated - First performed in London in 1641 - this contemporary production of Brome’s comedy celebrates the vagabond world of pop, rock and alternative music.
Springlove is a reliable and honorable steward, who works for his generous master Oldrents. Every year this young man feels the call of the open road, and wishes to travel with a band of beggars.
Rachel and Meriel (Oldrents’ daughters) are a pop duo also eager to join the rock beggars in their jovial life of jamming, recording and photography.
When they run away, merry hell breaks loose.
Springlove, Rachel and Meriel are joined on the road by others seeking change: evil Oliver, covetous Martin, faithful Vincent, stalwart Hilliard, and the fresh-faced ward Amy.
It’s a road movie that provides a meditation on freedom.
There were 8 performances.

The Late Lancashire Witches

Performance August 1634 Globe King's Men

Nathaniel Tomkyns. letter of 16 August 1634 to Sir Robert Phelips in Somerset

Comments from Source

Here hath been lately a new comedy at the Globe called The Witches of Lancashire, acted by reason of the great concourse of people three days together. The third day I went with a friend to see it, and found a greater appearance of fine folk, gentlemen and gentlewomen, than I thought had been in town in the vacation. The subject was of the sleights and passages [episodes, actions] done or supposed to be done by these witches, sent from thence hither, and other witches and their familiars: of their nightly meetings in several places; their banqueting with all sorts of meat and drink conveyed unto them by their familiars upon the pulling of a cord; the walking of pails of milk by themselves and (as they say of children) all alone; the transforming of men and women into the shapes of several creatures and especially of horses by putting an enchanted bridle into their mouths; their posting to and from places far distant in an incredible short time; the cutting off of a witch-gentlewoman.s hand in the form of a cat, by a soldier turned miller, known to her husband by a ring thereon (the only tragical part of the story); the representing of wrong and putative fathers in the shape of mean persons to gentlemen by way of derision; the tying of a knot at a marriage (after the French manner) to cassate [nullify] masculine ability; and the conveying away of the good cheer and bringing in a mock feast of bones and stones instead thereof, and the filling of pies with living birds and young cats, etc. And though there be not in it (to my understanding) any poetical genius, or art, or language, or judgment to state or tenet of witches (which I expected), or application to virtue, but full of ribaldry and of things improbable and impossible, yet in respect of the newness of the subject (the witches being still visible and in prison here) and in regard it consisteth from the beginning to the end of odd passages and fopperies [foolish or absurd actions] to provoke laughter, and is mixed with divers songs and dances, it passeth for a merry and excellent new play. Per acta est fabula. Vale.

The Northern Castle [Play and author not known, but it is possibly The Nothern Lass. The King's Company.
Pepy's Diary: My wife to the King's playhouse to see "The Northerne Castle," which I think I never did see before. Knipp acted in it, and did her part very extraordinary well; but the play is but a mean, sorry play; but the house very full of gallants. It seems, it hath not been acted a good while.'

The Novella

Performance 1632 Blackfriars, London The King's Men

External Source

Title page of the printed text of the play gives these details. It is to be supposed that the play was relatively popular and revived regularly as part of the King's Men's repertory, since it was included in a list of plays for which they sought protection in a Lord Chamberlain's order in 1640, preventing the listed works from being published without their permission. (See Bawcutt, p.268.)

The Queen and Concubine

Performance 1635 Salisbury Court King's Revels

Comments

The Queen and Concubine was probably the first play written under Brome's first contract to write plays for the King's Revels company at Salisbury Court, signed on 20 July 1635.
