DHI in Brief

What is the DHI?

  1. The DHI’s mission is to support the innovative use of technology and computation in arts and humanities research as a method of inquiry and a means of dissemination.
  1. We are a team of research software engineers, project managers and researchers who specialise in delivering technology projects of any size in the arts and humanities.
  1. We work with university academics and researchers, as well as professionals in the heritage, culture and information industries, across the UK and internationally.
  1. Since the DHI was created in the early 1990s we have delivered over 120 externally funded research projects, collaborated with 125 external partners, and received grants from 39 funders.
  1. During that time we have developed over 70 publicly accessible online resources and publications which we continue to host and maintain.

What does the DHI do?

  1. The DHI provides a range of services for its clients:
    1. We support the development of research funding proposals through our grant writing service. 
    2. We provide technical and computational support on projects. 
    3. And we host and maintain online research resources and data over the longer term.
  1. We use a wide range of technologies and methods, depending on the client’s requirements:
    1. From database development and computational ontologies, to LLMs, generative AI and computational linguistics.
    2. From data visualisation and 3D, to user-centred design and mobile apps.
  1. This has resulted in the DHI developing a diverse portfolio of digital products and tools, for example:
    1. Digitised crime records.
    2. Generative AI approaches to scholarly editing.
    3. Interactive maps of Italian cinema memories. 
    4. Scholarly editions of Tudor letters. 
    5. Data visualisations of medieval aliens.
    6. Linguistic algorithms for extracting meaning from human discourse.
    7. And even a citizen science platform for annotating 3D models of bird beaks.
