6.1. Different approaches to using an ontology

There are two areas of arts, humanities and social science research where a data ontology needs to be understood by a computer:

1. When creating or coding data (e.g via an editing tool or database).

2. When querying or presenting data (e.g. in the form of a website or data warehouse).

This section will look at creating or coding data. Section 7 will focus on querying and presenting data.

When creating data in the arts, humanities and social sciences there are broadly three approaches to how we can apply an ontology, irrespective of whether the primary or secondary source exists in an analogue format or is born-digital: document encoding, databases, and the blended approach.
