Alexander, first Abbot of Kirkstall (1147-82)

In 1147 Alexander was sent from Fountains Abbey, along with twelve monks of the abbey, to establish a new Cistercian community at Barnoldswick. Alexander was responsible for leading the community to its new site at Kirkstall in 1152, for initiating building work and expanding the abbey’s holdings.
