tilgæf (OSw) tilgjöf (ON) noun

A gift from the bridegroom given directly after the betrothal. In OIce and ONorw, the property of the bride to be inherited by the couple’s mutual children. In OSw, given to the relatives of the bride other than her giftarmaþer (q.v.), i.e. the man authorized to marry her off.
